Dr Strangelove

Peter Seller outdid himself in this movie.  He played so many parts; it was years before I realized just what a genius he was.  If you haven’t seen it, go rent Dr. Strangelove, How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.  This was the movie that broke down the barriers and gave a tense people permission to laugh at ourselves

This image began as a self-portrait but somehow got away from me and began to take on a life of its’ own.  As the distortions began to happen I saw a resemblance to Dr. Strangelove in the movie and began to play on it.

The growth of beard on the chin and the unraveling toupee were added, hopefully enhancing the questionable sanity of the strange doctor.  There is also a semblance of a uniform, a reminder of earlier grandeur when the Nazi culture was in full bloom.  The year 1938 comes to mind.

The goal of this painting is humor, pure and simple.  To quote my wife Sherry,  “THAT isn’t funny!”
